Proposed Bill Aims to 
Ensure Abenaki Use
of State Lands (03/29/22)

Use of Vermont state lands may be returned to the Abenaki for cultural and religious practices under a proposed bill. 

​

Though they already have access to public lands just as anyone does, the Abenaki’s activities on that land are still regulated by the state. Since they were stewards of the land long before Europeans colonized the area, the tribe wants the right to use it as they did... 

Trip to VINS a Lesson in Ecology for Enthusiastic WRVHS Students
(04/14/22)

Friday, a group of White River Valley High School students interested in the natural world paid a visit to the Vermont Institute of Natural Sciences (VINS) in Quechee. For some students, it marked the first field trip in two years of pandemic lockdown.

Annual Race Restarts in Shelburne (02/15/22)

Runners young and old turned out for the annual Cupid 5K race in Shelburne, an event that like many has been altered in recent years due to the pandemic. 

 

This race was in memory of Karen Newman, an athlete and author who regularly attended the Cupid 5k and who died of cancer in 2019.

Chelsea's Own 'Professor of Maple Syrup' (03/31/22)

On a Friday morning with the sun peeking through the clouds, Hale Mattoon and his son, Richard, had already gathered sap for boiling lat- er in the day.

 

Sugaring has been a part of Mattoon’s family for six generations. Like many Vermont families, it is a long-standing tradition that has been passed down over the generations. Soon to turn 82, Mattoon hasn’t missed a sugaring season since he started as a young boy.

Junior Iron Chef Makes
a Sizzling Return (04/07/22)

The first Jr. Iron Chef Vermont competition in two years saw over 30 middle and high school teams competing in the kitchen once again, including a team from Champlain Valley Union High School.

​

This is the first Jr. Iron Chef Vermont competition since it was canceled due to COVID-19. This year, the competition was almost canceled as well, not due to the pandemic but due to inclement weather.

South Burlington High School's New Ice Rink Open to the Public (02/24/22)

Did you know that South Burlington High School’s new hockey rink is open to the public?

The rink opened late last year and provides a great option for those seeking safe COVID-19 winter fun.

​

South Burlington High School principal Patrick Burke commissioned the rink so that physical education classes could go outside for a safer experience during the pandemic.
